About Vinca Plug Plants

Vinca (commonly known as periwinkle) is a hardy, evergreen perennial grown primarily as a ground cover plant. It produces trailing, rooting stems that spread across the soil surface, forming a dense, weed‑suppressing mat of foliage. Leaves are glossy, oval-shaped, and remain green throughout the year in most UK conditions.

Flowering typically occurs in spring, with some varieties continuing sporadically into early summer. Flowers are single, five‑petalled, and most commonly blue or violet, with white forms also available depending on variety.

Two main types are widely grown:

  • Vinca minor – compact growth, smaller leaves and flowers, well suited to borders and controlled ground cover
  • Vinca major – larger leaves and flowers, more vigorous growth, suitable for banks and wider planting areas

Vinca is tolerant of shade, poor soils, and dry conditions once established, making it particularly useful in areas where other plants struggle. Growth is steady rather than aggressive, and plants respond well to occasional trimming to maintain shape and spread.

Both Vinca minor and Vinca major are commonly grown, with minor being more compact and suitable for tighter planting schemes.

Growing Vinca from Plug Plants

Plug plants should be potted on or planted out once risk of severe frost has passed.

Best conditions:

  • Light: Full shade to partial sun
  • Soil: Free‑draining, adaptable to poor soils
  • Water: Regular watering during establishment
  • Spacing: Allow room for spread

Once established, vinca requires minimal attention and rarely needs feeding.

Where to Use Vinca in the Garden

Vinca plug plants are suitable for:

  • Shaded borders
  • Under trees and shrubs
  • Slopes and banks
  • Woodland gardens
  • Low‑maintenance areas

They are particularly effective where grass struggles to grow.
